Need help choosing?

Pressure Switches for Automation: Threshold Monitoring and Protection
Pressure switches (pressure relays) are used when you need a reliable signal that pressure or vacuum has reached a set point. Unlike a pressure sensor that transmits a measured value, a pressure switch acts as a threshold switch: it changes its output state when the set point is reached. This is useful for alarms, interlocks, equipment protection and monitoring circuit stability.
How to Choose a Pressure Switch
- Operating range: choose a range that covers normal operating values and potential peaks. For vacuum applications, specify the required range and units of measurement.
- Set points and hysteresis: consider how the switching and reset points are adjusted to prevent rapid switching when pressure fluctuates near the threshold.
- Output type: an NO/NC switching contact or an electronic PNP/NPN output, depending on the model. Some applications also require an analog output for diagnostics or a digital interface compatible with the control system.
- Mounting and connection: process connection, dimensions, cable or connector, and access for adjustment.
- Operating environment: moisture, dust, vibration, temperature and the required IP rating.
Typical Applications
- Pneumatic systems: low and high pressure alarms, compressor monitoring and circuit protection.
- Vacuum systems: monitoring vacuum in grippers and other systems, including signals indicating that a part has been gripped or lost.
- Industrial processes: start interlocks, emergency thresholds and monitoring of stable operating conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pressure Switches
How does a pressure switch differ from a pressure sensor?
A pressure switch changes its output state at a set threshold. A pressure sensor typically transmits a measured value through an analog or digital output for monitoring and control.
How do I choose the right operating range?
Choose a range that covers normal operating values and potential peaks. For vacuum applications, specify the required range and units of measurement.
Why is hysteresis important?
Hysteresis is the difference between the switching and reset points. It prevents the output from switching repeatedly when pressure fluctuates near the threshold.
Should I choose NO or NC?
That depends on your control logic and safety requirements. If you are unsure, send us your PLC input wiring diagram and we will help you choose.
Can I connect a pressure switch to a PLC or I/O module?
Yes, if its output type matches your equipment inputs. We can check compatibility and advise on the connection if needed.
