Optical (Photoelectric) Sensors for Industrial Automation

Optical sensors detect objects without contact, whether or not they are made of metal: boxes, parts, labels, transparent items and products moving along a conveyor. They can detect presence and position or count objects. Certain models also detect color or contrast, or suppress background reflections for reliable switching.

How to Choose a Photoelectric Sensor Type

  • Through-beam: separate transmitter and receiver. Provides long sensing distances and reliable detection, often making it a good choice for fast production lines.
  • Retro-reflective: sensor and reflector. Convenient to install and generally stable, but reflective or transparent targets and the need for polarization should be considered.
  • Diffuse-reflective: detects light reflected from the object. Simple to install, but performance depends on the object's color and surface and on the background.
  • Background suppression: helps prevent false triggering when an unwanted background is present behind the target.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Sensing distance and area: working distance, light spot size and positioning accuracy.
  • Target: size, color, reflectivity, transparency or translucency, and speed of movement.
  • Output and switching logic: PNP/NPN, NO/NC where available, and the required switching frequency.
  • Connection: cable or connector (often M8/M12) and ease of maintenance.
  • Operating environment: dust, moisture, condensation, vibration and the required IP rating.

Frequently Asked Questions About Optical Sensors

Should I choose a through-beam, retro-reflective or diffuse sensor?

For long sensing distances and reliable detection, consider a through-beam sensor. A retro-reflective sensor is convenient when you can mount a reflector. A diffuse sensor suits simple, short-range applications, but its performance depends on the target surface and background.

How can I detect shiny or transparent objects?

Depending on the target, you may need polarized retro-reflective optics, a sensor designed for transparent objects, background suppression or a through-beam arrangement. Describe the target and operating conditions, and we will help you find a reliable solution.

Do dust and moisture matter?

Yes. Dust and condensation can affect the optics. Choose a suitable IP rating and, where necessary, a sensor type and mounting arrangement that are less sensitive to contamination.

Which output does my PLC need: PNP or NPN?

That depends on the inputs of your PLC or I/O module. If you are unsure, send us the model number or input wiring diagram and we will check compatibility.

Can you select cables, connectors and accessories?

Yes. We can select compatible cables, M8/M12 connectors and mounting hardware for the chosen model and installation conditions.
