Laser Sensors for Precise Distance and Position Monitoring

Laser sensors are used where accuracy and stable readings matter: distance measurement, height and gap monitoring, positioning, counting and object detection. They help automate quality inspection and maintain process repeatability, even on fast production lines.

When to Choose a Laser Sensor

  • High accuracy or reliable detection of small objects is required.
  • A longer working distance is needed compared with a typical photoelectric sensor.
  • Position or movement monitoring is required, including height, level, gap or geometry checks.
  • Challenging surfaces, such as partly transparent, dark or high-contrast targets, need to be detected using an appropriate measurement method.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Range: operating distance and the required detection zone.
  • Accuracy and repeatability: especially important for gap and position measurement or quality inspection.
  • Measurement principle: triangulation for precise measurement over short to medium distances, or time-of-flight for longer distances, depending on the application.
  • Output and interface: a switching output, an analog signal (0–10 V or 4–20 mA) or a digital interface where needed, compatible with your PLC and I/O modules.
  • Target and background: color, reflectivity, transparency, surface angle and possible glare.
  • Mounting and environment: mounting hardware, cable or connector (M8/M12), dust, moisture and the required IP rating.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Sensors

How does a laser sensor differ from a standard photoelectric sensor?

A laser typically produces a smaller light spot and can provide better accuracy or more stable detection at a distance. This is useful for measurement and position monitoring.

Should I choose triangulation or time-of-flight?

Triangulation is often more accurate at short to medium distances. Time-of-flight is suitable for longer distances. The choice depends on the application and required accuracy.

How do I select a sensor for dark, shiny or transparent objects?

It depends on the surface, angle, background and required stability. Describe the target and operating conditions, and we will help you choose a suitable version.

Which PLC signal is better: 0–10 V or 4–20 mA?

It depends on the inputs available on your PLC or I/O modules. A 4–20 mA signal is generally more resistant to interference over long cable runs, while 0–10 V can be simpler to connect.

Can you help with selection and compatibility checks?

Yes. We will check the power supply, output or interface type, mounting requirements and operating conditions.
